Science Fair at Aljamea Karachi

Students from Thaqāfat ʿĀmma (the first four years of Aljamea's 11-year course equivalent to higher secondary studies) held a science fair on the theme of energy conservation, on the 3rd of February in the Aljamea-tus-Saifiyah, Karachi's campus courtyard. Drawing inspiration from subjects such as biology, physics, chemistry and geography — commonly known as ʿUlūm Kawniyya in Aljamea — students displayed 21 projects which outlined diverse and creative ways to conserve energy for a cleaner more sustainable future. The interdisciplinary approach was coupled with an Islamic outlook on science to greater appreciate the intricacies of nature and the manner in which mankind can benefit all of Allah's creation.

Among the projects on display was an instant solar water heater which managed to heat regular tap water to a temperature of 70 degrees celcius using nothing but the energy from the sun and some commonplace everyday materials. Concepts integral to the presentation such as the high thermal conductivity of copper and aluminium, the low thermal conductivity of water and thermometer calibration were also explained. These concepts were then philosophically expanded upon with reference to Amirul Mumineen Ali bin Abi Talib's AS counsel in which he instructs a person to be 'slow to anger, quick to calm down, and inclined towards readily accepting others excuses'.

The students' efforts were appreciated by more than 200 visitors including parents, faculty, fellow students and members of the broader community.
