From Text to Context: an Exercise in Patriotism

The students at Aljamea-tus-Saifiyah, much like the broader Dawoodi Bohra community to which they belong, hail from countries all over the world. Although unified by faith and cultural as well as religious traditions, Dawoodi Bohras are citizens of scores of different countries and are committed to the development and protection of the societies and nations they belong to. This unique trait is founded in the Prophetic tradition which not only encourages loyalty to and patriotism towards one's country, but frames it as an integral element of one's faith. 'Love for one's country,' as the Prophet Mohammed SAW states, 'is an intrinsic part of faith.'

In light of this statement and in the spirit of patriotism, students at all four campuses of Aljamea partook in collective intellectual exercises in contemplation and reflection of the Prophet's SAW above statement and its practical implications for contemporary life. Deriving inspiration from this maxim, students gleaned insight from their books as to how traditional Islamic teachings encourage the promotion of, and participation in, a number of civic duties.

One essay explored the role played by the implementation of Islamic business ethics in fostering patriotic ties between the varied citizens of a secular country. A mind map by one tālib delved into the effects of purity of thought and deed as prescribed by Fatimi philosophy and espoused by His Holiness Dr Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin TUS in creating a utopian society where citizens from all walks of life and all affiliations thrive in harmony. Another group advocated how drafting patriotic poems could motivate citizens to responsibly segregate their domestic waste.

Students presented their views in a number of formats including mind maps, speeches, essays and skits. Ultimately, the event resulted in stimulating discussions, informal debates, but most importantly, the practice and execution of an integral element of our faith: love for one's country.
