Centre for Research

The Centre for Research endeavours to produce scholarly work in the field of Fatimi studies in a manner which both protects the sanctity of Fatimi traditions and systems of knowledge, while also providing insight into its thought, philosophy and history.

The Centre in recent times has released various publications in the fields of history and literature. A series of commentaries on the literary works of His Holiness Dr Syedna Taher Saifuddin RA published annually contribute to the study of Arabic literature in South Asia and the proliferation of Fatimi history and philosophy in contemporary thought. Furthermore, detailed compilations of memoirs regarding His Holiness Dr Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin’s RA historic visits to North Africa and Yemen highlight the development of the Fatimi daʿwa in these regions and its effect in present times.

Currently, the Centre is also publishing critical editions of key Fatimi historical, philosophical and jurisprudential works, particularly those studied in Aljamea. The emendation of a work is carried out with reference to multiple manuscripts of the text found in the academy’s collection. These critical, emended editions are unique in that they adhere to the centuries-old Islamic tradition of being handwritten, yet also incorporate components such as endnotes and categorical indices that function as study aids. The combination of primary text and supplementary material aims to create for the student of Fatimi studies, a direct link with primary sources that fosters a deeper understanding of their meanings and connotations, an understanding not necessarily afforded in contemporary methodologies of the study of Islam. Works such as Syedna al-Qadi al-Nuʿman’s RA sixteen volume account of Fatimi history, Sharh al-Akhbār, Syedna Hamid al-Din al-Kirmani’s RA justificative treatise on the imāmat of Imam Hakim bi Amr Allah SA, Kitāb al Masābīh as well as many others have already been published.

The Centre is also responsible for the composition and compilation of Aljamea’s various external and internal circulations, including Majalla Aljamea-tus-Saifiyah, the academy’s scholarly journal.
